The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has announced the launch of a new £1.8 million Rural Micro Capital Grant Scheme for 2025/2026. The initiative, unveiled by Minister Andrew Muir MLA, will officially open for applications on Monday 15 September 2025 and is designed to strengthen rural communities across Northern Ireland.
Supporting Rural Communities
The scheme aims to provide much-needed financial support to voluntary and community organisations as well as Social Economy Enterprises. Grants ranging from £500 to £2,000 will be available for projects that directly address poverty and social isolation in rural areas. This investment falls under DAERA’s Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation (TRPSI) Programme, which has consistently supported grassroots initiatives in recent years.
Focus Areas of the Scheme
To qualify for funding, projects must be linked to one of four key themes. These include the modernisation of buildings or community assets, improvements in information and communication technology, initiatives that promote health and wellbeing, and projects that deliver energy efficiency or wider environmental benefits. By focusing on these areas, the programme seeks to empower local organisations to deliver practical solutions that improve everyday life for rural residents.
Minister’s Commitment

Minister Andrew Muir highlighted the importance of the grant scheme, describing it as a vital tool in strengthening the social and economic fabric of rural communities. He noted that during his visits to community groups, he has witnessed first-hand the positive difference these grants make. According to the Minister, the scheme not only reduces social isolation but also helps address sustainability challenges, supports diverse community growth, and enhances local resilience.
Delivery Through Rural Support Networks
The scheme will be delivered by Rural Support Networks across Northern Ireland on behalf of DAERA. These networks will play a crucial role in guiding organisations through the application process and ensuring that local needs are met effectively. Applicants are expected to provide at least 15 percent match funding, making the scheme a collaborative effort between government and community stakeholders.
Application Window and Deadlines
Applications for the 2025/2026 Rural Micro Capital Grant Scheme will be open from 15 September 2025 and will close at 12.00 pm midday on Monday 20 October 2025. Interested organisations are strongly encouraged to contact their local Rural Support Network as early as possible to receive advice and support when preparing their applications.
Building on Previous Success
The Rural Micro Capital Grant Scheme has already demonstrated its value in previous years. In 2024/2025 alone, more than 1,800 grants were processed across two phases, amounting to over £2.9 million in funding for community projects. These initiatives helped tackle pressing issues of poverty and social isolation in rural areas, reinforcing the importance of continuing the programme in 2025/2026.
Strengthening Rural Northern Ireland
Ultimately, the new funding represents more than just financial support. It reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing inequality, improving quality of life, and encouraging sustainability in rural communities. With targeted investment and community-driven projects, the Rural Micro Capital Grant Scheme has the potential to deliver lasting benefits across Northern Ireland.
